The Magic of Physics
with Catharine Gunderson
In this class, the instructor will demonstrate physics principles, briefly explaining the physics, and then students will practice an activity related to the principle to show others (such as how water is a weak magnet), or when appropriate, they will make demonstration materials to keep (such as balancing birds).
Cat says: "I have taught hands-on physics to students since the 1980's, and they have always not only enjoyed it, but have felt a sense of accomplishment to be able to demonstrate different physics principles to their family and peers."
Age: 7 -12
Cost: $55 including materials fee (Instructor is Ocean Grove Vendor), plus $12 DLC registration fee.
Activity Rating: Tangy-this activity is a mix of calm and high energy periods, good for kids who can focus for short periods of time but also like to get up and move around
About the Instructor:
I have been a homeschool teaching consultant and enrichment class teacher for 10 years at Loma Pieta Independent Home Study in the Santa Cruz Mountains. But long before that I was teaching after school and summer science classes since the 1980's in primarily physics for students ages 8 through 14.
I was co-chair of The Redwood Youth Foundation in Santa Cruz from 1984 until 1994, in which I taught amateur radio to kids and helped them get their license and learn morse code at 5 words per minute.
I have taught Space, Electronics, and Ham Radio in the SC County Advanced Studies program for 3 summers, and was the first person to teach a class for kids at Cabrillo College in their electronics department during a summer.
